Go Group Inspiration Idea 9th October

A big thank you this morning to Laki for sharing a very useful AFL and self assessment technique.

As you work through a topic collect a bank of questions, simple recall questions would work best for this technique. Once you get to the end of the topic create an answer grid which has a box for each question you have. Students then are given time to complete the questions. This is then a very visual self assessment task as the students select two colours, their favorite colour and their least favorite colour. As you review the answers as a class students colour in their answer boxes, their favorite colour for answers which are correct and their least favorite colour for incorrect answers. Both yourself and the students can quickly assess how much of the factual knowledge they have retained.

GO Group Minutes

Date and time: Monday 30th May 2016 14:30
Location: B44
Attendees: TKY, SCA, FDO, ASH, KIC, TSU
Apologies: EMA

Objective: To review the progress of the GO Group this year and set targets for the next academic year.

Agenda Items
1. G&T 2e students (twice exceptional) - EMA
EMA sent apologies. NGR to contact and ask for further information which can be shared in a weekly teaching and learning email with guidance on identifying 2E students in our classes and strategies for support.

2. Review areas of progress this year.
NGR - PEER Teaching has had an increase in participation. Could be expanded and linked into appraisal system. This would allow for expansion of coaching roles.
Teaching and Learning Email.
FDO - Further developments could be based on staff feedback garnered from a follow up survey. Potentially tie into a larger CPD survey to be introduced during INSET.
FDO - Have a termly/half termly focus. Use of departmental meetings to then generate ideas from each department from the specific focus which could then be shared each week.
SCA - CPD Training - Focused and useful CPD provided. Responsibility could be shared to departments. This would allow more people to present as some people felt their expertise were ignored this year.
SCA - Have more frequent CPD sessions, set up and stick to 5 week cycle.

3. Discuss potential improvements for next year.
FDO - Conduct a CPD survey and effectively analyse the data to provide targeted CPD sessions. This would once again allow staff expertise to be utilised effectively.
NGR - Greater use of the CPD library and sharing of ideas from the books available.
ASH - Improve access to CPD books. NGR has emailed Ana and Fe 30th May 2016 to request more prominent shelf space on the 1st floor of the library.
ASH - Check for most suitable meeting times to improve involvement.
NGR - Improve lines of communication with SMT.
FDO - Potential for use of CEM data and development of vocabulary focus with linked GO Group activities.
KIC - Look at the potential of creating tutor routines and having a whole school approach. NGR has setup and shared Google Doc for a suggested timetable. Deadline for completion Friday 3rd June. Google Doc to be shared with PPE.

4. Set targets for next academic year based on items 1 and 2.
Increase attendance and involvement. Use of CPD Survey and analysis of data to more effectively target relevant CPD.
Improve and enhance current links with Primary.
Structured calendar for CPD sessions and GO Group meetings
Deliver key CPD sessions during August INSET e.g.
Introduction to a British curriculum by a non-British teacher - SCA.
Introduce CPD and the vision for the year ahead and the GO Group - FDO
Dojo for new staff and refresher for established staff to get class list and groups updated - KIC, JGA and ANA.

5. AOB
NGR - Huge thanks to everyone who has taken part in the GO Group and helped make it a success over the previous two years. It was through your hard work, dedication and commitment to improving teaching and learning at our school which has allowed the group to have a positive impact. I know the group will go from strength to strength under Faye’s leadership and I look forward to hearing all about the continued success and growth.

  • Role Play Activity – Students given time to role play and create a short scene. Students can watch the performance and ‘swap in’ to see how various people/actions can completely change things.
Revision Techniques
  • STAD quizzes/questions – e.g. complete question at the start. Learn some things. Do the same question at the end to show progress.
  • Note Taking can be done by highlighting key words and asking students to replace them with other key words of their own. Swap with a partner to check understanding.
  • Traffic Light – areas needed to focus on when revising. FDO to develop T&L weekly email on questioning.
  • Peer Teaching – students are given a topic they feel confident with and prepare a presentation for the rest of the class. Can be used as a starter for a continuation of lessons.
